"I don't think we have been particularly attentive to the so-called care and feeding of donors," said David Axelrod, Mr. Obama's former senior adviser, who is now advising the re-election campaign.
"It wasn't a lack of appreciation for supporters," he said. "I think it was largely a function of the fact that the president and everybody around him was absorbed in dealing with some fairly significant challenges." Still, Mr. Axelrod and Obama re-election officials said the campaign's fund-raising totals would put to rest any doubts about Mr. Obama's donor base.
But an amazing anecdote suggests there's still a lot of work to be done with donors who think the administration has been tone-deaf:

After the man repeatedly returned to his personal troubles, Mr. Summers said that no one at the conference—where attendees were asked to raise $350,000—was experiencing the kinds of financial difficulties faced by ordinary Americans. The man got frustrated and left the room, people at the event said.

This is interesting Obama and his boys view their supporters as mouth breathing drooling loony bin patients in need of care and feeding. Maybe there is some truth there.
