Lakeesha Harris and Jeanean Watkins became the first pair same-sex for marriage of Civil Union licenses in the State of origin of Barack Obama on Wednesday, the Illinois after civil Union Act came into force. More than 100 couples, jubilantly in line behind them in the Office of the Secretary of the Cook County in the Centre of the Daley to receive their own civil Union licenses and congratulating each other on the political achievement.
Governor Pat Quinn signed the basic legislation this year, bearing in mind that something to provide justice and civil rights. On 31 January, what he considers a day in the history, the Democratic Governor was incredibly enthusiastic, stating, "we believe in civil rights and we believe in civil unions" between the emotion and the applause of an audience of 1,000 members fun. According to gay rights law lawyer senior officials group Lambda Christopher Clark, the law would grant to same-sex couples the same rights to couples married in the State of Illinois. It includes visitation of hospital, shared power, the right of inheritance to the ownership of a business partner and the right to choose medical treatment for the disease's business partner. Not because the federal Government does not recognize for civil unions, same-sex couples will provide Federal rights to married couples, a status which Clark commented, "this is an important step in our progress towards equality.""Federal law must change".
The National Conference of State legislatures has reported only four other States with the law of civil Union of two people of the same sex, while five States along with the District of Columbia for marriage between same-sex licenses. Illinois law also requires the recognition of trade unions.
A Jim Bennett of Lambda Legal statement said, "this event highlights a small sample of the many families in Illinois that provide protection, rights and responsibilities under the new law of Illinois." Today we congratulate thirty partners and all those who wish to obtain a civil Union, it is a great day to committed same-sex couples and their children.
